AQUATICS LEVELS
Ages 6 months -4-years-old
Parent and Child Aquatics is an introduction to basic skills for parents and children. Parents Learn how to safely work with their child in the water, including how to appropriately support and hold their child in the water and how to prepare and encourage their child to participate fully and try the skills. Children receive and introduction to basic skills that Lay a foundation for Learning to swim. In addition, parents are introduced to several water safety topics.
Ages 4 – 6
In preschool aquatics parents get to watch but don’t have to enter the water. Children are introduced to basic aquatic skills and begin to perform skills at a slightly more advanced Level. Skills are performed with assistance and we work towards performing skills independently. Children use simultaneous and alternation arm and Leg actions on the front and back to gain greater proficiency in preparation for performing strokes. In addition, children are introduced to water safety topics to help keep them safe in and around water.
Ages 5-9
Level 1 introduces basic aquatic skills which participants continue to build on as they progress through Learn-to-Swim. Participants start developing positive attitudes, effective swimming habits, and safe practices in and around the water. Skills are performed at a slightly more advanced Level, working towards independent swimming with arm and Leg action on the front and back. As children progress though Level 1 we will and Longer Lengths of time or Longer distance for skills.
Ages 5-12
Level 2 is to give participants success with fundamental skills. This Level marks the beginning of true Locomotion skills. Children will glide and float without support and recover to a vertical position. Children will develop simultaneous and alternation arm and Leg action on the front and back, Laying the foundation to future stokes. Again, water safety topics are introduced and previously acquired water safety knowledge and skills are reinforced.
Ages 6-12
Level 3 is to expand proficiency of previously Learned skills by providing additional guided practice. Children Learn and practice survival floating and Learn to swim front crawl and elementary backstroke at rudimentary Levels. Scissor and dolphin kicks and extended time for treading water. Previously and new water safety topics are included. By completing Level 3 children will have achieved American Red Cross basic water competency in a pool environment.
Ages 7-12
Level 4 is the final Level offered at VERDURE. This Level allows children to improve their aquatic skills and increase their endurance by swimming the stokes Learned in Level 3, front crawl and elementary backstroke, for greater distances. Children will also add arm actions to previously Learned scissor kick and breaststroke kick to perform the rudimentary sidestroke and Learn the breaststroke. Children will also Learn the back crawl and butterfly as well as performing a simple open turn at the wall.
